When Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys assembled at the Capitol Tower with producer Ken Nelson on September 24, 1957, to record two sessions for the Dance Ranch LP, they were creating one of the finest song collections of Hank's career--one that summed up his commitment to both honky-tonk music and Western Swing. "Songs For Rounders was a very popular album," Thompson said of the 1959 LP. "I think the concept and the content was so coherent. It was mainly my idea, because I wanted to do a couple of things like Cocaine Blues. I used to feature that song on my performances. It's a difficult song to do. Ken Nelson said, 'Hank, there's not a way in the world you'll ever get any airplay on that thing. We can do it in an album.' I said, well, if we can do it in an album, I do several other things that are kind of raunchy like Deep Elm Blues and Drunkard's Blues." And he said, 'Well, okay, we'll just do an album of songs with that theme."
